As Israel’s largest law firm with over 450 lawyers, Herzog Fox & Neeman is known for its innovative approach to delivering legal services. Their Tech Division, with over 70 transactional lawyers, leads the firm’s charge into cutting-edge work across venture capital, M&A, and cross-border commercial deals.
With a client base developing and deploying advanced technologies, Herzog turned to Spellbook to support scalability, consistency, and innovation across their legal workflows.
Herzog began by piloting Spellbook in their Tech Division, where tech-savvy lawyers—many with backgrounds as in-house counsel at leading tech companies—quickly saw its potential. From there, it expanded across the firm to IP, regulatory, corporate, and commercial groups.
Spellbook has helped reduce time spent on repetitive, low-value tasks like proofreading, formatting, and boilerplate drafting—freeing up attorneys to focus on higher-level work. Junior lawyers benefit too, accelerating their development by getting hands-on with more meaningful tasks earlier in their careers.
Associate Tzipi Zipper says, “for transactional lawyers, it’s like having an extra pair of super competent hands”.
By aligning documents to firm templates and eliminating human errors, Spellbook also helps ensure consistency and quality across cross-border deals.
While tech-savvy attorneys adopted the tool quickly, Herzog supported broader adoption through a phased rollout and dedicated training to ensure the entire firm could embrace the shift with confidence.
Spellbook’s integration with Microsoft Word made it attractive to lawyers who aren’t typically inclined toward change.
“Not all lawyers are tech-savvy… One of the big bonuses in Spellbook is having this simple add-in in your Word document where your lawyers are working,” Tzipi explains. “You can very easily chat with the tool, review things, summarize things—and that’s a really big part of it.”
One standout feature for the Herzog team is Spellbook Associate, a multi-document drafting and review tool that handles complex workflows. By uploading a single term sheet, attorneys can automatically generate key transaction documents, cutting hours from the drafting process. While some advanced capabilities like multi-document review are still evolving, what stands out is Spellbook’s speed of iteration. Recent improvements—such as the redline-capable chatbot—were rolled out within weeks based on direct feedback from the Herzog team.
“Spellbook works so well because they don’t wait for lawyers to request changes to the software. They spearhead their updates internally, improving from an engineer’s perspective rather than the user’s. This makes for a streamlined product, and I can see it in the results,” Miki, Herzog’s AI expert says.
According to Uri, one of Herzog’s attorneys, ease of use is key. “Spellbook’s best functionality is that it is synced with Word. We don’t have to manually connect the two programs, or download a third-party app that lags between the two. It’s fine-tuned on legal matters, so it has noticeably fewer mistakes than other options on the market.”
“I especially appreciate an extra set of eyes late at night on long, complex agreements,” Uri adds. “I use it in particular to review lengthy sentences and paragraphs and make certain that nothing I wrote is open to interpretation, and that it meets the party’s intentions.”
Before rolling out Spellbook firm-wide, Herzog conducted detailed security, compliance, and ethical assessments. Strict internal governance protocols ensure AI tools are used responsibly, particularly with regard to client confidentiality.
And unlike many AI tools, Spellbook requires little IT support. “Lawyers rarely turn to IT for help using Spellbook—I would estimate that they only need IT assistance under 10% of the time,” Miki noted.
These efficiencies have translated into reduced HR costs and more competitive pricing, giving Herzog an edge in client service and retention. Faster turnaround without compromising quality has only strengthened relationships with clients and enhanced Herzog’s reputation for technological leadership.
“The same way you might say two sets of eyes are better than one, a lawyer with AI is better than a lawyer without AI,” says Tzipi. “I don’t see AI as a replacement for lawyers—I see it as an enhancement.”
For Herzog, adopting Spellbook was a natural next step in their mission to deliver high-quality, technology-enabled legal services.
“As an AI expert, I know when a program just isn’t there yet,” Miki said. “Spellbook is.”
