Overview
Spellbook connects directly to a growing library of public legal databases so we can surface statutes, case law, regulations, and filings from the jurisdictions that matter to our practice. Whether we're researching Canadian employment law on CanLII, checking U.S. federal code on Cornell Law, reviewing EU regulation on EUR-Lex, or pulling Commonwealth authority from BAILII and AustLII, the sources are available inside the same workflow we use for drafting and review.
We're starting with well-known, publicly accessible legal databases — the authoritative government registers, court repositories, and legal information institutes that lawyers already trust. More sources are added over time as we expand jurisdictional coverage.

How We Use Legal Data Sources in Spellbook
Once a legal data source is available in our workspace, we can put it to work across the same flows we already use for our own documents:
- Ask: Pose a legal research question and get an answer grounded in the statutes and case law from the jurisdictions that matter to our matter, with citations pulled directly from the source.
- Draft: Reference authoritative legal language from these databases while we're drafting a clause, so our first draft is grounded in the applicable law rather than generic AI output.
- Review: Flag provisions in a third-party paper that conflict with statute or case law from our relevant jurisdiction, and surface the controlling authority alongside our redlines.
- Cite: Every answer pulled from a legal database includes citations back to the source, so we can verify, link, or attach the underlying data without leaving the workflow.
All of this happens inside Spellbook - no separate research tab, no logging into a dozen different databases, no copy-pasting between tools.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which jurisdictions does Spellbook cover?
We currently connect to over 100 public legal databases across North America, Europe, Central and South America, Asia & Pacific, the Middle East, and a wide range of Commonwealth and African jurisdictions via the LII (Legal Information Institute) network. The full list is above. Jurisdictional coverage expands over time.
Are these databases up to date?
Each database is maintained by its respective government, court, or legal information institute - we query the source of record directly, so the currency of our results reflects what the publishing authority has posted. For questions about a specific database's update cadence, we refer to that source's documentation.
